The writing on Ned’s beard in this painting is an extract from the infamous ‘Jerilderie Letter’ penned by Joe Byrne on Kelly’s behalf, in which Kelly attempted to explain the killing of three police officers at Stringybark Creek (as well as other matters) in the hope that the letter would be printed and distributed as pamphlets, potentially being published in national newspapers.
