Gabrielle Pool New Zealand; Australia, b. 1976-
Gabrielle Pool (b. 1976 in New Zealand) is an established artist recognised as much for her innovative painting as for her explorative spirit. Originally from New Zealand, she has traveled extensively and honed her inventive skills in some of the most eclectic locations on the planet. From an early mentorship in Japan, Pool has learned new methods at their creative source – from traditional techniques in the Chinese Guilin mountains, to rough-hewn innovation on the remote banks of Southern Ethiopia’s slow moving Omo River. Pool has been exhibiting globally since 1993. In 2004 she was invited by Nelson Mandela to collaborate in the 2004 Unity Series. A finalist in the Sir John Sulman Prize, Mosman Art Prize and Paddington Art Prize, she is best known for her large-scale commissions now held in private and public collections. Pool’s work has also been featured by various media outlets including TVNZ and National Geographic. Gabrielle has held 30 solo shows over the past 26 years and has had numerous invitations to exhibit in selected group exhibitions.
In 2004 Gabrielle began to record several of the world's vanishing tribes - the Hamer Tribe in Ethiopia, the Maasai of Kenya, and in 2010, the Indigenous women artists of Utopia in Australia's Northern Territory. Gabrielle has immersed herself in tribal life, often using sacred body paint pigments within her work. "My painting has always been driven by a desire to preserve and record the history of ancient people and their environments, in a world that seems to be trying its very best to eradicate them and 'civilize' them."
Gabrielle’s concerns have included imaging expeditions to Amman Jordan, Budapest Hungary, and the exquisite country around her home and studio in Northern NSW.
“Now I am celebrating this vast country of Australia and the exquisitely beautiful shire around my home. Painting the landscape with an echo of the people who have populated and farmed it, I would like to pay tribute to this land and to the ancestors and forefathers who developed it”.
Her practice has long been enriched by her itinerant existence, and thus she has set out on a painting journey around Australia in 2024, and is currently imaging the thickly wooded country around Daylesford in regional Victoria.
