The 9 by 5 Impression Exhibition was an exhibition in Melbourne which opened on 17 August 1889 at Buxton's Rooms on Swanston Street and featured 183 works, the majority of which were painted by Charles Condor, Tom Roberts, and Arthur Streeton of the Heidelberg School art movement, also known as Australian impressionism.
The exhibition's name references the dimensions of most of the paintings-9 by 5 inches (23 cm × 13 cm), the size of the cigar box lids upon which many of the works were painted-as well as the impressionist techniques employed by the artists.
BCFA's Christmas exhibition pays homage to these artists and the 9 x 5 impressions, by presenting a selection of small and miniature sized works by our stable of artists. Intimate in scale and theme and perfect as gifts, these artworks will add wonder to your Christmas stocking. We also hope this exhibition brings you joy!
From all our artists and everyone at BCFA- we wish you a Merry Christmas and a peaceful 2024.
